Lake Tsimanampetsotsa (which literally means “lake without dolphins” in Malagasy) is protected within a national park and as a Ramsar site. The lake directly precipitates carbonate in a closed evaporite basin defined by cliffs of Eocene marine limestone to the east (in front of the picture) and a wide strip of alluvium capping low outcrops of limestone to the west, towards the Channel of Mozambique.
As such, this lake is one of the rare modern equivalents for the spectacular Lagerstätten-producing alkaline playa lakes of the fossil record. The extremely low gradient within its basin produces dramatic changes in the aerial extent in response to seasonal changes in rainfall. These seasonal fluctuations create broad hyper-saline mudflats around the core lake area.
